You Must Use a Credit Card to Buy an iPhone   November 3rd, 2007

Yes, sir that is the fact. If you go to purchase an iPhone in the USA from a regular apple store, you cannot buy the iPhone without a credit/debit card.

It is interesting to follow this story too large to recount here, but is well done in the ZD Net article "Undercover video: Why Apple only takes credit cards for iPhones & the legal questions raised". This smacks of privacy issues and in the article it is suggested that Apple has overstepped its mark.

Apple is not giving out much information about why it requires a credit/debit card purchase, but it seems obvious that the reason is that they are limiting how many iPhones each person can purchase to stop the black market unlocking of these phones and selling them to Europe where iPhone cannot be purchased yet.

Read the article. Very interesting indeed.

Even with a credit card, Apple is only allowing you to buy one. Can you use the same card to buy at a different time and diffrent store? Can they track it? What if you have multiple credit cards?
