What is SMS Addiction?   January 17th, 2008

In a recent article published by IntoMobile regarding a Filipino teenager's SMS behavior, the writer asks if the behavior is akin to addiction.

What is SMS Addiction?

In a country where voice calls are expensive, SMS is the most affordable way to communicate. Compared to other countries, wired telephone services are not widely deployed in the Philippines. The easiest way to be connected is to get a mobile phone. Unlike countries that have mobile phone services that offer free voice calls during off-peak hours, there is no such a package in the Philippines. This makes SMS the most affordable solution.

So, if you travel a lot and tend to visit the country, do not be surprised when you see Filipinos using his/her mobile phone for SMS rather than voice calls! Frankly, it is easier to send one SMS to multiple recipients than calling each one, don't you think?
