Search by any other name August 23rd, 2007

Yes, yes, the word "search" and "Google" nearly mean the same thing these days. However, there are many hundreds of alternatives when you look at the online search services on offer. So why would we go beyond Google and use some of these other search services. In short, there are some ingenious search tools that give you a total different perspective on search results.
The first place to visit is the Read/Write Web's "The Top 100 Alternative Search Engines, April 2007". Here you can have a guided tour of the top 12 new search engines, and a special group of search tools that are given an "Honorable Mention".
Then you should visit with the "Web 2.0 Top 1,000 List" where you will see under the heading "Search" about 82 of the top search ideas currently on offer online.
To evaluate those 182 search tools you are going to need about 32 hours of online comparison shopping. But I know that you don't have 30 odd hours to do that so what seems to be a better way to do your shopping for a new search tools is going to be by way of searching on Google. Search for the attributes you want to see in the search tool you are seeking.
I searched for "RSS Search Tool" and behold I received several answers, but the best of these results was "blogdigger". I spent about ten minutes in evaluating the results I obtained from Blogdigger and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I then went back to the recommended 182 search engines and found that Blogdigger had an honorable mention.

Try it! These lists of the top 100 that we get from places like Mashable are not really what we need in these times when there are more online services than there are days in a year. To evaluate a Mashable top 100 list takes hours. Searching for what you need takes less time and guides you right to what you need.
