Save the environment using Blackle? Or does it?
Filed in archive Environment on August 1, 2007
A new search engine on the block? Try Blackle. What do you notice about the screen color in Blackle? Yes of course it is black.
So why is this new search engine background color black?
Evidently a "black Google" is reported to save 750 megawatt hours a year worldwide. Yes, that is right - "energy saving search".
This is called into dispute. Darren Yates testing the Blackle claim of saving energy through having a black background found that there was little power to be saved from a black background. The main savings, if any, were found to be when viewing a Blackle screen using CRT monitor rather than the newer LCD screens. Darren Yates calls into question whether an energy savings can be obtained by displaying a black background.
If you want a plain old black screen, just like Google has the plain old white background, then Blackle might just be the way to go.
Essentially, Blackle is a Google search with a black background. Checkout the results of a Google Search of "tech without wires" and a Blackle search of "Tech Without Wires". Similar results.
But also notice the little logo off to the right "Google Custom Search". So what we have is a Google custom search presented to us with a black background.
Is all of this environment "stuff" going to make you search via Blackle? For me, it is all a bit far fetched to think of saving the environment in this way.
Thumbs up for having a go, guys!

Considering that blackle works only on CRT it might be a waste when it comes to our new tech of Plasmas and LCD’s using liquid display…. But Energy is only 1 part of the concern, there is also the myth of the internet bandwidth being limited.
) and various articles covered in the past few months have all been focused around how Ineternet usage and bandwidth would be 50 times more than today and the content created then would jam the internet space.
Typically utilization of bandwidth and usage is directly proportional to the no.,quality & results of QUERIES that a user inputs from the moment he logs on. These queries can be as simple as searching, or as intense as uploading. At the end of it, its all about minimizing the no. of queries.
We are trying to research the potential ways of minimizing these queries by pre-defining most searched “keywords” & “categories”.
By not entering any search query, or typing for searches you would be skipping multiple steps and help in saving energy and bandwidth.
If we all try and add to this pre-defined list of searches, we can help save far more energy, bandwidth and money.
Help us all move towards the green technology.

Use www.smallestgoogle.com, even if the black doesn't save energy, the size saves time, space, and bandwidth (and some energy also). There is also a white version at www.smallestgoogle.com/w.html
