Mobile Phones

While everyone is immersed in the hype covering the new iPhone, other mobile phone platforms are still being continuously developed and improved. Take the case of the Neo FreeRunner platform, the second handset based on OpenMoko.
Ars Technica provides us with a first-look overview of his new platform. Whilst the hardware and software are great, it has yet to reach its full potential.
The Openmoko platform strategy is clearly still evolving, but it has a lot to offer for developers who want a truly hackable Linux-based mobile phone that elevates freedom and choice.
However, for more serious developers, it may not *yet* be the best platform.
Users who absolutely need reliability in a programmable smartphone right now are better off looking for more mature options, but enthusiasts who appreciate the potential of a truly hackable smartphone and are willing to be patient with some of the current inadequacies will probably find the current platform acceptable.
I was thinking of getting this for my students but changed my mind since both hardware and software are rapidly evolving. Maybe towards the end of 2008, we will have a more stable environment.
