Not too long ago, I decided to try and leave home with only the iPhone, leaving my Macbook Pro behind, to attend a 3 day out of town conference. The most part of the trip, I have survived because I only had to check my e-mail and view a couple of websites. However, when my colleague requested that I send him a file for a meeting, I suddenly realized that I should have kept some of my documents online for easy file sharing. Whilst there is MobileMe, there are alternative file storage services available online at practically zero cost.

SmashingApps listed their top 5 free file hosting services, namely File Savr, File Factory, File Den, File Qube and File Dropper. Whilst this is by no means an exhaustive list of free file storage services, these seem to be worth looking at, don't you think?

Personally, I have used DropIO and Box.net along with my MobileMe iDisk. The above-mentioned services are definitely worth checking out. How about you, what do you use?

Uploading your file to more then one place is always a good idea.

This not only makes sure that people gets the file but also gives an option to people to use their favorite file hosting provider to download.

Upload Mirrors allows you to upload files to multiple hosting providers in one click.

(RapidShare, MegaUpload, EasyShare, DepositFiles, ZShare, FlyUpload, SendSpace, Badongo, NetLoad, MegaShare, ZippyShare and UploadedTo )

and then provides you one link which contains links to all these sharing service.

This makes it easy for anybody to distribute ebooks, movies, mp3 files or Dj Mixes to share with his friends.

keep your files online! No more broken links!

My personal recommendation would be the current topper BackupandShare.com. I am using their service for more than 6 months now. No problems so far and it is very easy to use and cost effective service.

BackupandShare?!?!?! Are you kidding? Their “UNLIMITED” plan is 3-TIMES the price of most others ($150). I suppose if you want to store 10GB or less and be able to share the files, then their $49.95 plan might make some sense. If all you want or need to do is backup your files, then you want to search and check out Carbonide, Mozy or BackBlaze. All are UNLIMITED storage and are all priced around $50.
