Facebook more than a social utility   July 31st, 2007

Facebook more than a social utility

Facebook is making a name for itself. Recently TechCrunch asked the question "Could Facebook Become The Next Microsoft?".

Like me you possibly thought that Facebook is just another one of those social utility sites that joined people into groups and allowed communication between those people and groups.

Lifehacker now explains why we could even start thinking about Facebook challenging Microsoft in the article "Get productive with the best Facebook Apps".

In this article Lifehacker lists all the software applications (software as a service) that are available to use in the facebook platform. There are writing/wordprocessing software (Zoho), file storage applications (Files and Divshare), edit photos (Picnik), RSS Feed services (MyRSS and Google Reader), and web search searching Google, Amazon and Wikipedia from within Facebook.

I have just picked the important applications there are many more listed in the Lifehacker article.

Now the picture is becoming clearer why we might even consider Facebook a competitive threat to Microsoft – Facebook can be a platform to run just about any type of software/service you can imagine. Move over Microsoft!
