Also since I was on the librarian theme, I found this great librarian cartoon (as shown at the top of the post) that has been around the world and back again. You can buy a copy of this picture inscribed any which way you want. Has a great idea, the librarian as the search engine!
All of this brings me to the point of the post. How does a library see itself in this modern age of search engines, online information, compared to the rather bookish history of a library as it has evolved over the last few hundred years?
Maybe there are things to learn about turning your/my business around by being more accepting of the variations of people who come to do business with us. A library with three operating systems, serving customers, helping them to obtain information online and offline.
These days with business you need a complete set of whatever it is you are serving; allow for six different operating systems, people from all countries, ten payment systems, five means of delivering goods/services. Yes, niche is still in, but niche does not mean we turn away from diversity.
Is your business ready to serve Windows users and Ubuntu users and know what each needs in order for your offer to be interesting? Do you Ubuntu?
