Increasingly the 2 x 2 cubicle is no longer the office we know or that we use. There is a growing army of workers, mostly information workers, who office from home, on the road (meaning in airports, hotels and Internet cafes), client sites or anywhere when communication is required. If your practices are like my mobile activities, you can work from anywhere, at anytime, and more than likely for multiple bosses, or multiple clients.

No longer are we issued with a computer connected to the company network, and no longer are there a multitude of programs to use in order to calendar events, write documents, share slides and connect with people in meetings. Either because we are self-employed, or because your company now provides you with a laptop, the required tools to get working are sourced from free sources, or are provided already installed on the company laptop. However, there are fewer and fewer of us who are provided a full set of software because we work independently or because the company prefers that each individual sources what that individual needs to work with as company wide solutions are no longer satisfying the tastes of individual workers who have their own way of working.

While few in number today, there is in increasing number of people who prefer open source software that is free and ready to use. Open source operating systems, like Ubuntu, are fast becoming exactly what an information worker needs, free from heavy up-front purchase costs, readily available, and easy to use. It is this world of options that is making mobile officing an even more satisfying way to work due to the availability of software to get jobs done and the ease of use these programs provide when there is no technical support for the mobile, on the road, office worker.

This is what this blog is dedicated to -- the worker from the mobile go anywhere office. It is this view of the mobile office worker that we provide information on Basic technology, potential software, desirable gadgets, money saving voice products, online services, wireless networking, methods of keeping in touch with clients and/or the main office, and the locations from which you may find yourself working.
