Android gets third-party apps

Google just released the list of winners of their Android Developer Challenge. Each winner gets USD25,000 towards making the application into full products and ready for distribution when the first Android-based handsets get into the market.

Some of the applications are: BioWallet, a biometric-based authentication system; GolfPlay, a tool for golfers that includes location-based information; and AndroidScan, a barcode scanning application. For full list of applications, check the page. Notice that there are 4 applications missing – well, maybe the developers are afraid that someone will be able to develop a far better version of their application come release time. :P

Exciting times for the mobile phone industry. More and more applications may render us to have smaller devices and just leave those bulky computers at home and in the office.
