At Acer's global press conference in the fall of 2009, the company mentioned their plan to surpass Dell as the second largest PC vendor in the world. And as the 3rd quarter results went out, Acer had shipped about 10.7 million units. This sharp rise is due to the launch of mainstream and portable notebooks, and the great value Acer offers in most categories.

But there is much to be desired, especially with design, software, and technical support.

Systems like those in the Timeline series give above-average battery life, but the graphics performance of many Acer notebooks is not impressive.

When it comes to design, many of Acer's netbooks and notebooks look plain. The company has focused most of its efforts into making its notebooks cheaper, but some style would be good as well.

The keyboard is generally good. However, the touchpads can be a bit larger and the buttons less stiff, particularly on netbooks.

Technical support by email for basic questions takes less than 24 hours. There is a voicemail pitch for extended warranties. But the company provides limited support hours for some systems.

Acer's notebook go for $400 to $900, which is rather low and there are plenty of models to choose from.

Acer provides some nice tools for its laptops like eRecover and Launch Manager but there is a lot of room for growth in this area.

Acer was among the leaders in providing touch and 3D at low prices, and so many appreciate this kind of forward thinking.

WiBE: Powers up your broadband connection

Some good news for companies based out of countryside. A new Wireless Broadband Enabler (WiBE) device has been launched by Deltenna which is a self installed router connecting through mobile networks and puts to use antenna technology for improving signals.

Using this plug and play system, a 2MB Wi-Fi hotspot is created for customers to access and is expected to come to the aid of companies based in countryside suffering from poor internet connectivity.

As per Andrew Fox, CEO, Deltenna:

There are still millions of people throughout Europe and the US for whom fast broadband is a myth. The WiBE's range and throughput means broadband can more easily, and cost-effectively, be deployed in regions that don't have access to DSL.

Now even cell phone companies have decided to go green, all thanks to the save your environment campaigns going on across the globe. Sony Ericsson has unveiled its GreenHeart series of cellphone keeping in mind the environment around us.

Dubbed as Cedar, it is a candybar style phone with 2.2-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, HSDPA, 3.5mm headphone jack and integrated FM radio. With it you also get Netfront 3.5 browser, Exchange ActiveSync and you can even use your phone as a USB mass storage device.

It has been created from recycled plastic with low power consumption charger. In order to save the environment, the cell phone will be available in a compact box with manual in an electronic form.

Cellphones are quite popular because of the mobility they offer and for this very reason people use it for making calls as compared to landline phones. Since cellphones are in fashion, companies are taking initiatives to minimize e-waste and for this very reason Sony came up with Cedar.

But not only eco-friendly aspects are important for choosing a new cellphone, also the price for the phone and of course the price for the phonecalls. Calling cards are preferred among cell phones users because of the cost factor and you can use them for making international calls without affecting your budget. For e.g. if you would like to call India, you can use India calling card to call India cheap. Calls are definitely cheaper using calling cards.
